Project VIBRANT

A harm reduction program in North Carolina that distributes naloxone free of charge and trains stakeholders how to recognize and respond to overdoses

VIBRANT stands for Vance Initiates Bringing Resources and Naloxone Training. In 2015, using grant funds from the Health Resource and Services Administration Federal Office and locally from the Triangle North Healthcare Foundation, Project VIBRANT distributed emergency opioid reversal kits to stakeholders in Vance and Granville counties, North Carolina.

Healthcare providers, law enforcement, and other community members received kits and training on how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose. The project also used a community outreach worker to identify and train individuals at risk of overdose on the use of naloxone, delivering door-to-door services free of charge. The VIBRANT Coalition has continued this work.

2,294 naloxone kits distributed...276 reported overdose reversals.

Evidence of Program Effectiveness

As mentioned in a report written by experts in the field, Project Vibrant was able to “successfully distribute over 2,294 naloxone kits and achieve 276 reported reversals across both Granville and Vance Counties. The successful work of Project VIBRANT also led to the addition of both a fixed and a mobile syringe exchange program for Vance County in 2017.” (McClure and Harrison, 2018).
